Bette Lynch Husted will be here to read from her new collection of essays, Lessons from the Borderlands (Plainview Press). These essays form a memoir of Ms. Husted’s childhood that follows her life from her poor, rural childhood in Idaho through her college days and teaching career. It is a remarkable look at a hardscrabble life, changed in many ways through hard work – but it is also a meditation on the things that never leave you. “Lessons from the Borderlands speaks the truth. Truth about the working poor, about class in America, about possibilities and barriers in a small town culture in the West. In this book I saw myself and my family, and the stories that have gone largely untold – stories about race and gender and the heroism of ordinary people struggling to live a decent life. It is a brave book, a necessary book, and moreover a beautiful book, rich with the language of poetry and of our Western landscape. Read it, please, and pass it along.” – Molly Gloss
