Kristy Athens will be here to present her new book, Get Your Pitchfork On! The Real Dirt on Country Living. In 2003, Ms. Athens and her partner Mike left the city lights of Portland and moved to a seven-acre parcel of land in the Columbia Gorge. They were suddenly farmers without much knowledge and no experience, and were forced to learn many things about rural life – the good, the bad, and the chainsaw. Though the experience was stressful and ended after six years (sooner than they had planned), they learned to cherish the experience. In fact, they plan to do it again, only smarter. This is more than a how-to book about farming for beginners. It does give hundreds of pages of practical advice about land, livestock, buildings, wildlife, food, and more – but the author also deals with things that are not normally included in books of this type. There are chapters on small town etiquette, dealing with hostile neighbors and situations, making a living in a rural community, access to health care, and other intangible things that nobody would think to tell you unless they had lived it and knew it was important. It’s a hugely informative and entertaining book, whether you are considering a move to the country or are content to simply read about it.
