Judith Arcana, Announcements from the Planetarium

Judith Arcana, Announcements from the Planetarium

We welcome Portland poet Judith Arcana to the store to read from her new collection, Announcements from the Planetarium, published by Oregon’s Flowstone Press, Left Fork’s new poetry imprint. She will be joined at the reading by Michael Spring, the editor and publisher at Flowstone, and Ryan Forsythe, editor/publisher/designer at Left Fork.

The poems in this collection move through time -- examining memory, considering the nature of wisdom, aging into new consciousness -- using individual poems like sections of a quilt. The writer Naomi Shihab Nye describes this collection as having “great wit, music, and pacing.”  She goes on to say “Vivid passionate hungers, all stitched through the nubby fabric of aging with gorgeous shining threads. We can wrap ourselves right up in these poems for courage and verve.”

Born and raised in the Great Lakes region, living now in the Pacific Northwest, Judith Arcana is a writer of poems, stories, essays and books. A longtime teacher of literature, writing and women’s studies, Judith has a PhD in Literature, an MA in Women's Studies, an Urban Preceptorship in Preventive Medicine and a BA in English. She’s taught in high schools, colleges, libraries, living rooms, a state prison, and a county jail. Judith’s work has been published in many collections and journals, online and on paper, including What if Your Mother, 4th Period English, and Grace Paley’s Life Stories: A Literary Biography. You can read more about Judith and her work at her website, Juditharcana.com.
