Karen Locke, High-Proof PDX: A Spirited Guide to Portland's Craft Distilling Scene
On Thursday, November 2nd, at 7 pm Portland food & drink writer Karen Locke will read at Broadway Books from her new book High-Proof PDX: A Spirited Guide to Portland’s Craft Distilling Scene, published by Overcup Press.
High-Proof PDX is the first-ever comprehensive guide on how to navigate the city’s local distillery artisanal drinks scene. Portland has twelve working distilleries within city limits, many within walking distance of each other, making well-known spirits such as vodka, gin, and whiskey, as well as lesser-known liquors such as aquavit and baiju. This book tells the story of these distillers, while setting the craft-distilling scene in the larger context of Portland’s maker culture.
Joining the author at this event will be representatives from Vinn Distillery, run by the Ly family. Vinn specializes in baijiu, China’s most popular alcohol, and also produces vodka, whiskey, and blackberry liqueur. Rumor has it they will be bringing samples for adult members of the audience!
Locke moved to Portland from Minneapolis in 2011. She served as editor of Drink Portland for almost three years and has written about food and drink for Bon Appetit, Sip Northwest, OnTrak magazine, Willamette Week, MIX magazine, and others.
