Richard Tillinghast, Journeys Into the Mind of the World: A Book of Places

On Wednesday, October 11th, at 7 pm, Richard Tillinghast will read at Broadway Books from his newly published book Journeys into the Mind of the World: A Book of Places, published by The University of Tennessee Press.

Tillinghast is a poet, critic, and essayist. Born and raised in Memphis, he has traveled widely in Europe, America, Asia, and the Middle East. Travel and change have always been a part of this poet’s life and work. In this new collection of more than thirty essays, he revisits some of the places that have spoken to him most profoundly, including Ireland, Tennessee, and Hawaii, not only recalling his experiences but also exploring the history and culture of each place and depicting them with a poet’s eye.

He is a graduate of Sewanee College and has his master's and PhD from Harvard. He has taught at Sewanee, Harvard, UC-Berkeley, the University of Michigan, and The Poets' House in Ireland, and in the college program at San Quentin Prison and the low-residency MFA program at Converse College. He founded the Bear River Writers' Conference in 2000 and was director until 2005. He has published a dozen books of poetry and several nonfiction books. For twenty years beginning in the 1980s, Tillinghast reviewed new poetry for The New York Times Book Review. He has also reviewed and written literary essays for the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and The New Criterion. Retired from teaching, he currently divides his time between Tennessee and the Big Island of Hawaii.
