Sylvia Verange, Two Breaths, One Step: Hiking Across the Himalayas
Artist, landscape architect, teacher, and traveler Sylvia Verange joins us at 7 pm on Tuesday, October 23rd, to read from her recently published book Two Breaths, One Step: Hiking Across the Himalayas, published by Rare Bird Books.
From an early age, Verange loved the serenity of nature. Born in southern California, she keenly observed and studied the natural surroundings at hand, and began to draw and paint. Her early studies continued at UCLA, UC-Berkeley, and the University of Oregon, where Verange received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture Degree. She has spent more than three decades carefully mastering how to use color, form, texture, and design to create her art. Her paintings encourage the viewer to approach with imagination and with a sense of mystery.
In 1984, Verange set off on a five-hundred-mile journey across the Himalayas of Nepal. The book follows her hiking through the breathtaking scenery, remote mountain villages, and treacherous, freezing conditions, laying out both a historical snapshot of the region, as well as an epic travelogue of a once-in-a-lifetime journey. Two Breaths, One Step follows one woman's hike through the Himalayas as she endures nature and comes to know herself. When not on an adventure in wild and beautiful places, Verange paints, writes, and teaches in northern California.
