We are thrilled to announce we are sponsoring another Year of Reading at Broadway Books. We launched the program with James Baldwin, then followed it up with Toni Morrison and then with Ursula K. Le Guin. Our original goal was to encourage people to read more books by authors we're particularly jazzed about. This is our selection criteria: authors whose books are, mostly, readily available; authors who write in multiple genres to appeal to all types of readers; and authors whose work we greatly admire and enjoy. This year at Broadway Books we offer (...drum roll, please...) The Year of Reading Barry Lopez!
While Lopez is probably best known for his nonfiction--Embrace Fearlessly the Burning World is his most recent--he also wrote fiction. In 1986 he won the National Book Award for Arctic Dreams. For decades he was known not only for his books and essays about the kinship of nature and human culture, but also for his generosity in championing other writers. We lost Lopez in 2021 to cancer but are grateful to still hear his voice through his writing.
Not only do we have Lopez's vast collection of books to share with you, but we will be extending the discount to a couple of related new books this year. From Here to the Horizon: Photographs in Honor of Barry Lopez presents the work of fifty of America's leading contemporary landscape photographers honoring the life and work of Lopez and accompanied by excerpts from the book Lopez created with his wife, Debra Gwartney, Home Ground: A Guide to the American Landscape. Syntax of the River presents a collection of conversations between Barry and South African writer and scholar Julia Martin.
We will have more to say about his books, as well as about related events, in future newsletters. We are happy to announce that through 2023, all of Barry Lopez's available books listed below will be discounted 20% at Broadway Books, for both in-store and online purchases. Shop as much as you like!
